- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
For the Cheese Topping
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
- 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1/4 cup sour cream
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
- 1/2 tsp dried thyme (or fresh thyme leaves for garnish)
For Garnish (Optional)
- 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
- 1/4 cup crispy fried onions or breadcrumbs for crunch
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Onions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
- Peel the onions and slice them into 1/2-inch-thick rings. Separate the rings and arrange them in a single layer in the prepared baking dish.
- Drizzle the melted butter and olive oil over the onions. Sprinkle with salt and black pepper, tossing gently to coat evenly.
Step 2: Make the Cheese Topping
- In a mixing bowl, combine the shredded mozzarella, Parmesan, and cheddar cheeses.
- Add the mayonnaise, sour cream, garlic powder, smoked paprika, and dried thyme. Stir until well combined.
Step 3: Assemble the Dish
- Spoon the cheese mixture evenly over the onion rings, making sure each ring is generously coated.
- Sprinkle additional cheese or breadcrumbs on top for extra texture, if desired.
Step 4: Bake
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake uncovered for an additional 10 minutes, or until the cheese is golden and bubbly.
Step 5: Garnish and Serve
- Remove the dish from the oven and let it cool slightly. Sprinkle with fresh parsley and crispy fried onions, if using, before serving.
- Serve warm as a side dish, appetizer, or topping.
