  • Author: Sophia
  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb large shrimp (peeled and deveined, tails on or off)
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 small green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 1 small celery stalk, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tsp Creole seasoning (store-bought or homemade)
  • ½ tsp dried thyme
  • 1 cup tomato sauce (or crushed tomatoes)
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbsp hot sauce (such as Tabasco or your favorite brand, adjust to taste)
  • 1 tbsp honey (optional, to balance the heat)
  • ½ cup chicken or seafood broth
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
  • Optional garnish: Sliced green onions or lemon wedges

Instructions

Step 1: Prep the Shrimp

Rinse the shrimp under cold water and pat them dry with paper towels. Season with a pinch of salt, black pepper, and a sprinkle of Creole seasoning.

Step 2: Sauté the Aromatics

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil and butter over medium heat until melted and bubbling. Add the chopped onion, bell pepper, and celery (the “holy trinity” of Cajun cuisine) and sauté for 4-5 minutes until softened. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.

Step 3: Toast the Spices

Add the smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, dried thyme, and the remaining Creole seasoning to the skillet. Stir constantly for 1-2 minutes to toast the spices and bring out their flavors.

Step 4: Build the Sauce

Pour in the tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and hot sauce, and stir to combine. Add the chicken or seafood broth and honey (if using). Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it cook for 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken slightly.

Step 5: Cook the Shrimp

Add the shrimp to the skillet, nestling them into the sauce. Cook for 3-4 minutes on one side, then flip and cook for another 2-3 minutes, or until the shrimp are pink, opaque, and cooked through. Be careful not to overcook them.

Step 6: Finish the Dish

Stir in the lemon juice and taste the sauce. Adjust the seasoning with additional salt, pepper, or hot sauce if needed. Garnish with fresh parsley and green onions (if using).

Step 7: Serve

Serve the Spicy Voodoo Shrimp hot, either over rice, creamy grits, or with crusty bread to soak up the flavorful sauce. Add lemon wedges on the side for an extra burst of citrus.
