Spicy Calabrian Shrimp

  • Author: Sophia
  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

For the Shrimp:

  • 1 pound (450g) large shrimp, peeled and deveined (tails on or off, based on preference)
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

For the Calabrian Sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 ½ tablespoons Calabrian chili paste (adjust based on spice tolerance)
  • 1 lemon, juiced (about 3 tablespoons)
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • ¼ cup dry white wine (optional, or substitute with chicken broth)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped

Optional Garnishes and Sides:

  • Crusty bread for dipping
  • Fresh parsley or basil leaves
  • Extra lemon wedges

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Shrimp

  1. Rinse the shrimp under cold water and pat them dry with a paper towel.
  2. In a bowl, toss the shrimp with smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper until evenly coated.

Step 2: Make the Calabrian Sauce

  1. Heat olive oil and butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Once the butter has melted, add the minced garlic and sauté for 1–2 minutes, or until fragrant (be careful not to burn it).
  2. Stir in the Calabrian chili paste, allowing it to dissolve into the oil and butter mixture. Cook for 1 minute to release the flavors.
  3. Add the lemon juice, lemon zest, and white wine (if using). Stir and let the sauce simmer for 2–3 minutes to reduce slightly.

Step 3: Cook the Shrimp

  1. Add the seasoned shrimp to the skillet, spreading them out in a single layer. Cook for 2–3 minutes on one side, then flip and cook for another 2–3 minutes, or until the shrimp are pink and opaque.
  2. Stir the shrimp to coat them in the sauce, then sprinkle with fresh parsley.

Step 4: Garnish and Serve

  1. Serve immediately with crusty bread for dipping, or over your choice of pasta, rice, or salad.
  2. Garnish with additional parsley and lemon wedges for a fresh, vibrant finish.
