For the Pasta:
- 1 pound ziti or penne pasta
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
For the Meat Sauce:
- 1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 jar (24 ounces) marinara sauce or your favorite pasta sauce
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1/2 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
For the Cheese Filling:
- 1 cup ricotta cheese
- 1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
For the Assembly and Topping:
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Fresh parsley or basil for garnish
Instructions
Step 1: Cook the Pasta
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the ziti or penne pasta and cook until al dente according to package instructions.
- Drain the pasta, toss with olive oil to prevent sticking, and set aside.
Step 2: Prepare the Meat Sauce
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef or Italian sausage until browned, breaking it up into small pieces.
- Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, cooking for 2-3 minutes until softened and fragrant.
- Stir in the marinara sauce, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 10 minutes.
Step 3: Make the Cheese Filling
- In a mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, softened cream cheese, sour cream, Parmesan cheese, egg, and garlic powder.
- Mix until smooth and well combined.
Step 4: Assemble the Baked Ziti
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Spread a thin layer of the meat sauce on the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Layer half of the cooked pasta evenly over the sauce.
- Spread half of the cheese filling over the pasta, followed by half of the remaining meat sauce.
- Repeat the layers with the remaining pasta, cheese filling, and meat sauce.
- Top with shredded mozzarella cheese and grated Parmesan.
Step 5: Bake the Ziti
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly with golden edges.
Step 6: Serve and Garnish
- Remove the baked ziti from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes before serving.
- Garnish with chopped fresh parsley or basil. Serve hot and enjoy!
