For the Meat Sauce:

  • 1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

For the Cheese Filling:

  • 1 cup ricotta cheese
  • 1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

For the Assembly and Topping:

  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh parsley or basil for garnish

Instructions

Step 1: Cook the Pasta

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the ziti or penne pasta and cook until al dente according to package instructions.
  2. Drain the pasta, toss with olive oil to prevent sticking, and set aside.

Step 2: Prepare the Meat Sauce

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef or Italian sausage until browned, breaking it up into small pieces.
  2. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, cooking for 2-3 minutes until softened and fragrant.
  3. Stir in the marinara sauce, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 10 minutes.

Step 3: Make the Cheese Filling

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, softened cream cheese, sour cream, Parmesan cheese, egg, and garlic powder.
  2. Mix until smooth and well combined.

Step 4: Assemble the Baked Ziti

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Spread a thin layer of the meat sauce on the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  3. Layer half of the cooked pasta evenly over the sauce.
  4. Spread half of the cheese filling over the pasta, followed by half of the remaining meat sauce.
  5. Repeat the layers with the remaining pasta, cheese filling, and meat sauce.
  6. Top with shredded mozzarella cheese and grated Parmesan.

Step 5: Bake the Ziti

  1. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes.
  2. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly with golden edges.

Step 6: Serve and Garnish

  1. Remove the baked ziti from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes before serving.
  2. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley or basil. Serve hot and enjoy!
