Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef (80/20 or leaner)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- ½ cup beef broth (or water)
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon sugar (optional, for slight sweetness)
- 4 hamburger buns, lightly toasted
- Dill pickle slices (for topping)
- Additional mustard for serving
Instructions
Step 1: Sauté the Onion
In a large skillet over medium heat, add a small drizzle of oil or a tablespoon of butter. Once heated, add the finely chopped onion and cook until translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent burning.
Step 2: Brown the Ground Beef
Add the ground beef to the skillet with the onions, breaking it up with a spatula or wooden spoon. Cook until the beef is browned and no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.
Step 3: Season the Beef
Reduce the heat to low and add Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and sugar (if using). Stir to distribute the flavors evenly.
Step 4: Simmer with Broth
Pour in the beef broth (or water) and stir well. Let the mixture simmer on low heat for 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the liquid to be mostly absorbed. The meat should be moist but not overly wet.
Step 5: Assemble the Sandwiches
Spoon the seasoned loose meat onto toasted hamburger buns. Top with dill pickle slices and a drizzle of mustard. Serve warm and enjoy!
