- 1 small green bell pepper, diced (optional)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup halal-certified ketchup
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard (halal-certified)
- 2 tablespoons halal Worcestershire sauce substitute (see note below)
- 1/4 cup beef broth (halal-certified)
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional, for depth)
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
For the Cheese Sauce
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 cup milk (ensure it’s alcohol-free)
- 1 1/2 cups shredded halal-certified cheddar cheese (or vegetarian cheese)
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for a spicy kick)
For Serving
- 6 halal-certified hamburger buns (ensure no non-halal additives)
- Optional toppings: halal pickles, lettuce, tomato slices, jalapeños, or halal turkey bacon
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Filling
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it into crumbles with a wooden spoon, until browned. Drain any excess grease.
- Add the onion, green bell pepper (if using), and garlic to the skillet. Sauté for 3-4 minutes, or until the vegetables are softened and fragrant.
- Stir in the halal-certified ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce substitute, beef broth, and smoked paprika. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the mixture to thicken slightly. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Step 2: Make the Cheese Sauce
- In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly, to form a roux.
- Gradually add the milk, whisking continuously to avoid lumps. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer and cook until thickened, about 2-3 minutes.
- Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the shredded halal-certified cheese, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper (if using). Mix until smooth and creamy.
Step 3: Assemble the Sloppy Joes
- Spoon a generous portion of the beef mixture onto the bottom half of each hamburger bun.
- Drizzle the cheese sauce over the beef, allowing it to cascade down the sides for a messy, delicious presentation.
- Add your desired toppings, then place the top bun on each sandwich.
Step 4: Serve and Enjoy
- Serve immediately with sides like halal French fries, potato wedges, or a simple green salad.
