Amish Onion Fritters

  • Author: Sophia
  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

For the Fritters:

  • 2 large sweet onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp paprika (optional, for color and flavor)
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup milk (whole or 2%)
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Optional Add-Ins:

  • 1/4 cup chopped parsley or chives
  • 1/4 cup shredded cheddar or Parmesan cheese

For Serving:

  • Sour cream or ranch dressing (for dipping)
  • Fresh herbs for garnish

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Onions

  1. Peel the onions and slice them thinly, separating the slices into rings.
  2. Place the onion slices in a large mixing bowl and set aside.

Step 2: Make the Batter

  1. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika (if using).
  2. In a measuring cup, combine the beaten egg and milk. Gradually pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, whisking until a smooth batter forms. The batter should be thick enough to coat the onions but not overly runny.

Step 3: Coat the Onions

  1. Pour the batter over the sliced onions in the large mixing bowl. Use a spatula or your hands to mix until all the onion slices are evenly coated with the batter.

Step 4: Heat the Oil

  1. In a large skillet or deep frying pan, heat about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil over medium heat. The oil is ready when a small drop of batter sizzles and floats to the surface.

Step 5: Fry the Fritters

  1. Using a spoon or small scoop, drop mounds of the onion mixture into the hot oil, pressing gently to flatten them slightly. Fry in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pan.
  2. Cook each fritter for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy. Adjust the heat as needed to prevent burning.

Step 6: Drain and Serve

  1. Remove the fritters from the oil using a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  2. Serve the fritters hot with your choice of dipping sauce, garnished with fresh herbs if desired.
